The first man that saw horses running across a flat part of land probably wagered a bet he knew which horse was going to get there first. Once man started to domesticate the horse around 4500 BC in Asia they started to race them and the only people that could participate were kings and the nobles of the area. Horse racing was one of the events during the very first Greek Olympics. This was the beginning of the History of horse racing.

In England the knights that went on the crusades returned with Arabian horses during the twelfth century. These horses were graceful and fast unlike the English horses that worked the fields. Several Stallions were bred with some of the mares of English descent creating a strong and durable horse with a great deal of speed. The nobles of the kingdom would bet on which horse would cross the finish line first and that started horse racing as we know it today.

Up until 1752 there was no documentation of any horse races until the race from Buttevant Church to St Marys in Ireland County Cork in the town on Doneraile. The horses raced from the steeple of one church to the steeple of the other and the first steeplechase was born. Steeple chasing was very popular in Britain and the most well known races are Liverpools Grand National that ran its first race in 1839 and the Irish Grand National taking place on Easter weekend every year in County Meath.

Professional horse racing began in the nineteenth century. Owners started to train their horses in hopes of making them run faster and smoother. If you won a race you received money from the bets made on the horse. Owners who trained their horse made more money than those that did not train and those well paid owners met in Newmarket to form the Jockey Club in 1750. This club controlled all functions of horse racing in Britain and still does today.

This authority wrote down all regulations and strictly enforced them. The Jockey club would set up races and regulated the size and shape of tracks or courses. It set up the races that comprise the English Triple Crown and ran them well. They were in charge of all wagering on horses. They began to document the family tree of a horse and determined what horses could race and those that could not.

Horses that have a documented family tree or pedigree are considered Thoroughbreds. These horses have been inbred and can have their linage tracked down to one of three Stallions brought over from Arabia and bred with other horses. Racing of thoroughbreds came over to America in 1665 and a track was built on Long Island. Racing horses became very popular and by 1890 there were over 300 race tracks in America.

Because there was no real governing authority in America most tracks were run by unscrupulous characters and something had to be done about that. The American Jockey Club was formed in 1894 in order to curb criminal activity in many horse tracks. The damage was already done and unlike horse racing and wagering in England where it was acceptable and done with grace and dignity, American racing and a connotation of being corrupt. Racing in the US was nearly banished by 1900 because of it.

In 1894 the American Jockey Club was organized and developed regulations that they had to strictly enforce. By the time they were done only about 35 tracks remained open. Pari-Mutuel betting was introduced at the 1908 Kentucky Derby in an attempt to save the sport and wagering. This was a way of betting that was considered acceptable and legal on horses that were qualified to race, riders that were met requirements to ride, and owners that had horses with pedigrees and therefore able to race. The sport once again became popular and respectable.

Horse racing occurs all over the world today and there are many types of racing to be enjoyed. The Steeplechase is still popular mostly in England but also in America. A type of racing that started in America called Harness Racing has many tracks devoted to only that type of racing. The popular Thoroughbred racing is currently held on small tracks of about three quarters of a mile up to tracks that can accommodate two miles in length. Horse racing in both Britain and America is strictly regulated so you can place wagers at the track legally and know that the horse you are betting on is an acceptable horse.
